Day Wise Guide for Sikkim Road Trip – Best Road Trip In India
A road trip is the best way to explore the state of Sikkim and the state surely gives you one of the best road trip experiences in India. Here below is a day wise guide for you if you are planning a road trip to Sikkim:
Day 1: Setting Off On The Journey to Sikkim
After all the planning is done and bags are packed, get ready and fuel up your vehicle. Once everything is done and dusted, hop into your vehicle. A car is more preferable than a bike ride. Once in your vehicle, put on the map from your location to Gangtok.
Yes, Gangtok will be the first stop of your road trip. Reaching Gangtok would take you about a day or two. I suggest starting from Kolkata in West Bengal to reach there in a day. You can spend the night over at a motel on the Highway or can switch the drivers on the driving seat if possible to reach early.
Day 2: Hello Gangtok!
Your first stop has to be Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim. The winding roads, and waterfall you will see waterfalls and greenery along the way. Do not forget to enjoy the changing terrains and the falling temperatures with every turn you take on your journey. Once in Gangtok, find a cozy place to stay and try the delicious local food like momos and thukpa.
Reach Gangtok and stay overnight in a hotel. You can also refer to the best hotels in Gangtok for a comfortable stay. After the long drive, your body would need rest and energy, make sure you eat properly and sleep well.
Day 3: Exploring Gangtok
Today, on the third day, you will explore Gangtk. You can visit monasteries like Enchey and Rumtek, and wander around the lively markets, enjoying the sights and sounds of it. Do not forget to shop at MG Marg and find some great souvenirs to remind you of the experience you had at Gangtok.
Explore the local cultures and cuisines there at Gangtok and do cover the view points. Although your entire road trip would be blessed with amazing views of the greater Himalayas. If the day is sunny and clear, you might even get to see Mount Kanchenjunga in close proximity. Kanchenjunga is India’s highest peak.
Take rest and sleep overnight at Gangtok. The next day would be a long drive to one of the best locations in Sikkim so make sure you rest properly.
Note: Apply for permits for your travel to North Sikkim prior to your journey to the North.
Day 4: Going From Gangtok To Lachen – Exploring North Sikkim
Set out early to Lachen in North Sikkim. Make sure to get your permits checked. Also stay hydrated. You will cover a lot of height throughout the day. Make sure to take short breaks through your drive to Lachen. Drive responsibly and safely on the mountains.
The drive will take you the entire day. Make sure to be layered with your winter clothes. Once in Lachen the temperatures might get too cold and freezing. Reach Lachen and find a homestay to rest for the night. You can also look for hotels, but I prefer homestays once in the far ends of the state to enjoy the authentic essence of the state and its culture.
Day 5: Visiting Gurudongmar Lake and heading to Lachung
Wake up early in the morning and enjoy the sunrise of snow capped Himalayan peaks. The golden shade on mountain tops will surely leave you amazed. Freshen up, get ready and leave for Gurudongmar Lake.
I guarantee you that your journey to the Gurudongmar Lake would be the most memorable one. You will cross the World’s Highest Dosa Point and many hairpin bends on your way.
Note: Make sure to respect the privacy of the Indian army camps by not capturing pictures of the army camps. These places are highly sensitive being situated on the border area. Just make sure to respect their privacy.
Once you have visited Gurudongmar Lake, come back to Lachen, load your valuables and head towards Lachung. You will reach Lachung after a few hours of driving. Find your homestay and live there for the night. I would suggest booking your stays prior online if you’re traveling during the peak season time.
Day 6: Exploring Yumthang Valley and Zero Point
Wake up fresh and get ready. Today you will be exploring Yumthang Valley, which will be like walking on a colorful carpet of flowers. Then you will go to Zero Point, where you will see snowy mountains all around yourself. It feels like you will be at the edge of the world!
Capture some great pictures and memories of yourself in front of the Greater Himalayas. You will be amazed by the stunning and colorful views of the Himalayan mountains. Explore Yumthang Valley and stay the night at your homestay. This will be your last day in North Sikkim, make sure to make the most out of it.
Day 7: Back to Gangtok
Wake up early and fresh. It is now the time to leave Lachung and head back to Gangtok. You will be having a great drive back as well. Make sure to be safe while enjoying your drive back to Gangtok. Along the way, you can stop at Chungthang, a pretty town with views of the Teesta River. Back in Gangtok, over a nice dinner, you can remember your experience.
Stay in Gangtok for the night and make sure to get proper rest. You will have your drive back home the next day.
Day 8: Going Home
With memories of Sikkim in your hearts, pack up your bags along with the essence of Sikkim and start your journey back home. Even though your trip will be over, I guarantee you that you will always remember the beauty and warmth of Sikkim.
Alternative Trip
If your budget and time permits for another few days in Sikkim, you can explore East Sikkim in a day and Ravangla and Pelling in two days. These places are different from North Sikkim, but you will also be exploring different essences of the state of Sikkim if you travel to these places.
You are never going to regret going to these places and exploring them when in Sikkim. Make sure you have enough bucks in your pocket and hours in your watch, that’s it!
